Traveling by boat from Calabar, Nigeria on to Cameroon was quite the experience, especially with the captain giving us free roam of the ship! In Douala, we were greeted by Celine, Jean Sebastien’s girlfriend. The team was excited to share their journey through Cameroon with her.
The World Cup was finally beginning!! People on the street rejoiced, television sets screening the opening ceremony were endless…..football fever was palpable! Even non-fans joined in celebration when Cameroon played it’s first game.
Wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city for a bit, we headed to the beautiful beach area of Kribi. Here we stayed in a house on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic. The team took advantage of the house’s solitude by editing and relaxing in the surf.
While staying in Kribi, we met Bonache, who provided an ‘in’ with the pygmy population. We were able to visit two separate pygmy villages and learn more about their ways of life.
After heading back to Douala, we found our friend Hans, an aspiring football player. We spent several days with him to learn all that he must endeavor through to achieve his dream. Early morning training sessions, long hours working at a restaurant, providing support for his family, all of this took it’s toll on the young man but his spark never dimmed.
